Twenty years ago, there were a multitude of machine manufacturers of all kinds. Their products, however, were very similar. Any technician well trained in basic electronics, mechanics and hydraulics could repair them.
In the area of occupational hazards, the demands and pressure were minimal compared to nowadays. EU directives and standards were in their infancy. Commercially, we were in an expanding market. Simply to be was to thrive. There was a place for everyone and everyone was growing.

Applications have evolved. Demands of all kinds are at the end of the street. The number of opportunities are fewer. Customers are more informed. Communications and the Internet reduce time and geographical distances. What used to be advanced knowledge is no longer even considered differentiating. Accessibility, speed, customisation, security and utility are the differentiating attributes of products and services.
Aiming better, being more informed, knowing in detail the state of the art of the product/service, avoiding improvisation, copying and having lower costs seem to be essential tools to avoid missing the mark and to find out that new "what to do".
